Juhannusaaton juhlintaa - Celebrating midsummer's eve

Eilen vietettiin juhannusaattoa kotosalla, sillä tänään juhannuspäivänä oli ohjelmassa serkkuni häät. Juhannusta juhlittiin rauhallisesti perheen kesken grillaten, herkutellen ja pihalla kauniista säästä nauttien. Juhannukseen kuului tietysti myös lipunnosto.

Yesterday we celebrated midsummer's eve at home. My family and I had a barbeque, enjoyed all kinds of tasty foods and spent a nice day outdoors enjoying the weather. In Finland we fly a flag when celebrating midsummer. Today on midsummer's day we went to my cousin's wedding. To have a wedding on midsummer's day is something very traditional to do here in Finland.

I found my thrill on a Blueberry hill...

Syön aika usein rahkaa aamupalaksi. Tässä erään aamun kokeilu: rahkaa, pakastemustikoita ja vaahterasiirappia. 

I often eat "rahka" for breakfast, it is a bit like sour cream (dictionary also gave the word "quark" as a translation). It has a lot of protein, but not that many calories or fat. One morning I had it with some frozen blueberries and maple syrup.

Ensimmäinen sadonkorjuu - The first harvest

Kasvimaalta on saatu jo ensimmäisiä maistiaisia. Retiisi on nopea kasvamaan ja nyt olisi aika jo tehdä uusintakylvö. Retiisin maku on mielestäni ristiriitainen, muistan kuinka lapsena en pitänyt siitä lainkaan. En ole juurikaan retiisiä sitten lapsuuden jälkeen rouskutellut, mutta puutarhainnostuksen iskettyä halusin kuitenkin kokeilla sen kasvattamista. Nyt kasvimaan tuotoksia paljaaltaan maistellessani ajattelin, ettei se maku ole kyllä lapsuudestani juurikaan parantunut. Ilokseni kuitenkin yllätyin, kun salaattiin sekoitettuna retiisit maistuvatkin oikeastaan ihan hyviltä ja antoivat kokonaisuuteen mukavan vivahteen.

We have already had a first taste of the fruits of our labour in the garden. Radish is quick to grow and now it is already time to sow it again. I think the taste of radish is quite controversial, as a kid I thought it was gross. I haven't really eaten it after my childhood, but as I was struck by this garden enthusiasm, I thought I would give it a go. As I was tasting the radishes I picked from my own garden the other day, I thought that the taste had not got any better since I was a kid. To my surprise, mixed into the salad with all other ingredients, they tasted much better and gave a nice tang to the salad.

Nestemäistä aamupalaa - Liquid breakfast

Viime sunnuntain aamupala oli raikas vihersmoothie, jossa oli Romaine-salaattia, ananassalviaa, marokonminttua, banaania, omenaa, sitruunamehua ja vettä. Lisäksi marokonmintun lehtien kera haudutettua vihreää teetä. Tee on ostettu noin kuusi vuotta sitten lomamatkalta Marokosta, hyvinpä vielä näytti makua lähtevän :)

Last sunday's breakfast was a fresh greensmoothie with Romaine lettuce, pineapplesage (don't know if that's the correct translation), morocconmint, banana, apple, lemonjuice and water. I also had greentea brewed with morocconmint leaves. We bought the tea from our holiday to Morocco six years ago, but it still seemed to have a great taste :)

Coco Choco

En voi syödä suklaata, mutta vakuuttelen itselleni, että muutama pala valkoista suklaata sillon tällöin ei ole niin pahasta... Löysin Citymarketista Ritter Sportin White Coconut suklaata, joka maistuu kerrassaan herkulliselta. Tälläiselle kookoksen rakastajalle kyseisen suklaan rapea, mutta samalla suussa sulava koostumus kookoksen makuun yhdistettynä on suoraan taivaasta!

I can't eat chocolate, but I keep telling myself that a bit of white chocolat every now and then is not that bad... I found Ritter Sport's White Coconut chocolate from the supermarket and it tastes sooo good. For a coconut-lover like me the crispy yet easy melting consistency combined with the taste of coconut is straight from heaven!

Ruususuolaa ja Voimaleipää - Crystal salt and Energybread

Ruuanlaitossa käytän joko merisuolaa tai kristallisuolaa. Masajon Ruususuola on laadukasta kristallisuolaa, jota louhitaan Bolivian vuoristosta. Ostin kokeeksi myös Masajon Jaksamisleipää. Se on erittäin proteiinirikasta ja sopii hyvin esimerkiksi välipalaksi. Makuja löytyy erilaisia, itse otin kokeeksi chia-siemenillä ja omega 3:lla  höystettyä leipää.

In cooking I use either sea salt or crystal salt. Masajo's Rosesalt is quality crystal salt, that comes from the Andies in Bolivia. I also tried Masajo's Energybread, which is very rich in protein and is perfect as a snack. They have a few different flavours, I chose the one with chia seeds and omegas.

Summer living

Meitä on todellakin hemmoteltu kuumalla ilmalla. Päivän tukalimmat tunnit olemme lasten kanssa viettäneet sisällä. Talomme pysyy onneksi mukavan viileänä helteestä huolimatta. Muutoin elämä on siirtynyt pihamaalle. Kukat kukkivat täyttä päätä, kasvihuoneessa ja kasvimaalla kasvit kasvavat silmissä. Illat hujahtavat istutuksia kastellessa. Karun talven jälkeen alkukesän vehreys tuntuu ihmeelliseltä - kuin sademetsässä asustelisi.

We have truly been pampered with hot weather. The hottest hours of the day we have spent indoors with the kids. Lucky enough, our house stays nice and cool even if it is hot. Otherwise we have stayed outdoors enjoying the summerdays. The flowers are blooming and the plants are growing with amazing speed in the greenhouse and vegetable garden. It takes some time in the evenings to water are the plantings. After the harsh winter the lushness of summer feels magical - it is like living in a rainforest.

Ticket to the tropic

Vehreä kesä ja suorastaan helteiset ilmat saivat seurakseen tropiikin tuoksuja. Body Shopin kookos suihkuvoide ja eau de toilette tuoksuvat ihanan kesäisiltä.

The lushness of summer and downright hot weather we are now enjoying were accompanied with the scents of the tropic. The Body Shop's Coconut shower cream and eau de toilette have a lovely summery scent.

Istutuslaatikot - Garden in a box

Viime kesänä meillä oli pieni kasvimaakokeilu puutarhassamme, josta innostuneena päätin tänä kesänä hieman laajentaa viljelyrepertuaariani. Kasvimaa siirtyi myös miehen tekemiin puisiin "laatikoihin" sillä ajatuksella, että ne ovat helpommat hoitaa ja pysyvät paremmin turvassa pihalla rehottavilta rikkakasveilta. Mies teki kolme laatikkoa, kooltaan noin 1m x 2,5m. Ensi kesäksi toivon ehkä yhtä laatikkoa lisää, sillä pieni lisätila olisi ihan tarpeen. Kylvöksistä salaatti, retiisit ja herneet ovat jo nousseet mullasta, muita odotellaan - jännittävää!

Last summer we had a little experiment in our garden to grow some vegetables. It was so much fun that this year I decided to broaden my vegetablerepertoire. This year the vegetablegarden has moved to "boxes" my man made himself. The idea is, that the plants will be easier to take care for and they will also be safe from the weeds that are thriving in the garden. T made three boxes, about the size of 1m x 2,5m. Next summer I hope he will make a fourth one, as a little extra space for the vegetables would be welcome. The lettuce, radish and peas have already started to grow, and we are waiting for a lot more to show up - exciting!

Kasvihuone - Greenhouse

Kasvihuone valmistui hienosti äitienpäiväksi. Miehellä meni vaarin kanssa päivä sitä kootessa, sen verran kiinalainen juttu tämä viherhuone oli. Kuvat on otettu kokoamisen jälkeen, nyt kasvihuoneessa alkaa olla jo aika täyttä. Mietinnässä on, miten suojata varsin hennolta tuntuva rakennelma ensi talven lumikuormalta?

The greenhouse was built just in time for mother's day in early may. It took the whole day for T and his dad to put it together, it was kind of tricky thing to do. The pictures were taken right after the greenhouse was built, now it is already quite crowded in it. At the moment we are wondering how to make sure that the fragile greenhouse won't be broken when the snow comes next winter?
